I create mixed media animal and nature-themed paintings. While these works are representational, they are not realistic. They are stylized and incorporate techniques in both drawing and painting – from cross-hatching and mark-making to linear painting and ink splatter. These paintings are heavily influenced by my love of wildlife, folktales, patterns, archetypes, and the decorative and illustrative arts. I also like to imitate other media such as textile art, etchings or mosaics within my paintings.
Each artwork is created working in multiple layers of acrylic ink, acrylic paint, and ink pen on cradled wood panel. In addition to these ink and pen layers, some of my work – my “Fauxsaic” paintings - also incorporates elements of collage in which I add hand-colored and cut watercolor paper to the artwork in a process that resembles mosaic tile.
One of my primary artistic interests is exploring animals, icons and archetypes. Whether painted on cave walls, portrayed as omens or totems or even worshiped as personifications of the gods, animals were a favorite motif for our ancestors, and they still continue to infatuate people today. Animalistic imagery and themes can be seen in pop culture in everything from folklore and mythology to cartoons, logos and mascots. My artwork takes a closer look at this archetypal animal kingdom. Reinterpreted through art, abstraction, decorative element and contemporary vision, these creatures speak to our collective unconscious.
